Loughborough Sporting Club: Football
The reputation of Loughborough University’s sporting ability has not been established only through recent achievements. It was developed by those students who have attended since being founded back in 1919.

Loughborough Football 1919-20When new students come to the University and join the club they regularly cite that it is both the ingrained desire to win and to be the best, as well as the camaraderie within the club, that stands out for them for they find their time as a football club member so memorable. That inherent ambition to achieve and enjoy that journey is a legacy of those that have attended before them.

As students pass through the club there seem to be common traits amongst them notably the desire to win the University title at their level, to improve as a player, to enjoy every moment with their teammates and to use their University time as a springboard to be better things in life. Throughout the years the football club has had some great achievements. As well has holding the clear record for University titles, many of the players that have passed through have often gone on to achieve great things either as a player or in other capacities in the sporting/business world.

In around 1999/2000 the University recognised that a number of its sports clubs had such a rich history and wide network of former members that were out there influencing the wider sporting arena, but were not in contact with the University.

The University alumni asked the main sporting clubs to start their own sports club alumni which the football club duly did. Ten years on and the alumni is going strong having developed its contact base going back over 40 years. On building this network it was fascinating to see how many former members are now working in the football industry and both the professional, grass roots and administrative level at Premier League teams as sports scientists, fitness coaches or physios. In 2011 the University approached the football club alumni to officially join the Loughborough Sporting Club. We are proud to have Bob Wilson as our club Patron and Andy Cale as our Loughborough Sporting Club: Football chairman and the lead members are Ross Emery, Tim Crane and Peter Simmons.
